(The figures in brackets refer to the number of hectares of forest land to be excised.)
The TOTAL AREA of forest land to be excised is 67,185 hectares (approximately 170,000 acres)
Kenya Forest Group is against the excision of environmentally critical forests under the pretext of settling the landless and squatters. While the total size of the proposed excision is not very large, they pose real danger to the eco-systems in some of fragile Rift Valley Lakes such as Nakuru, and World Heritage Sites such as Mount Kenya. There has been little effort to seek alternatives such as the purchasing land for this purpose; no environmental impact studies seem to have been carried out; the entry into these reserves could be just the beginning as the proposed distribution is to only a limited number; etc
KENYA FORESTS WORKING GROUP (KFWG) is a gathering of institutions and
organizations (national, local and international, governmental and
non-governmental) concerned with Kenyan forests and their conservation and
management.
