IST-231: Sirimon Route, Mount Kenya
- 5 days
|
Considered by many to represent Mount Kenya's most scenic route to Point Lenana,
Sirimon is on the dry side of the mountain and affords walks through old growth
forest on the lower slopes and giant heather, alpine flowers, and lobelia in
higher elevations. |
 |
 |
Day 1:
Depart from Nairobi in the morning to Naro Moru River Lodge, arriving in
time for lunch. Afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. |
|
 | Day 2:
Morning drive to the Sirimon track for a 3-5 hours hike past the park
gate and the mountain forest to Old Moses. Few environments can match a tropical
forest for the richness of its flora and fauna: Trees, shrubs, vines, creepers,
orchids, ferns, fungi, mosses, wildflowers and lichens abound; mature trees,
saplings, and fallen giants can be viewed at all stages of growth and decay,
often growing from one another; the forest may be surprisingly silent, but
networks of paths testify to the presence of animals - elephant, buffalo, or a
variety of other forest game. Night at Old Moses Camp (3,400m). |
 | Day 3:
Hike via Mackinders Valley from Old Moses Camp to Shipton's Camp (6-
8 hours walk). Scenic beauty is punctuated by regular uphill and downhill
interludes as you traverse the valleys. It is true that on parts of Mount Kenya
one can experience summer and winter temperatures almost daily with temperatures
ranging from possibly -5C to 20C. Night at Shipton's Camp (4,200m). |
 | Day 4:
A very early morning ascent of Point Lenana (4,985m). From the top,
begin the very long hike back to the base camp and then proceed to the Lodge for
overnight. |
 | Day 5:
After breakfast transfer back to Nairobi or continue on safari. |
|
IST-232: Naro Moru Route, Mount Kenya
- 5 days
 |
Day 1:
Transfer in the morning from your hotel to the Naro Moru River Lodge,
your base for the trek up Mount Kenya. The remainder of the day will be at
leisure and for preparation of your Mount Kenya expedition. |
 | Day 2:
At midday, drive to the roadhead of the Naro Moru track from where you
will hike up to the Met Station approximately 2 kms distance. - sleeping at an
altitude of about 10,000 feet, zero degree latitude Equator. The mountain above
9500 feet forms the Mount Kenya National Park and is a World Heritage Site.
Night at Met Station. |
 | Day 3:
The hike up into the Teleki Valley to the Mackinder's Camp will
provide opportunities, weather permitting, to have spectacular views of the main
peaks. From the Met Station the trek will be through a wide swath of deep bog,
and in the event of rain (which is likely), the going will be even slower. The
hike today will be 5 to 7 hours. Overnight at Teleki Valley (13,900 ft). |
 | Day 4:
An early pre-dawn start is scheduled to ensure a summit bid in time
for the majestic summit scenery at dawn. Although not of a technical nature, the
hike to the third highest peak of Mount Kenya (Point Lenana at 16,355 ft) is
physically strenuous. The track involves approximately a kilometer hike up the
valley, crossing several small rock outcrops and a swampy area before starting
the scree ascent to Point Lenana.
Return to the base camp and proceed down the mountain to the Lodge. |
 | Day 5:
After breakfast transfer back to Nairobi or continue on safari. |
IST-233: Sirimon Route exiting Chogoria Route, Mount Kenya

the third highest peak of Mount Kenya (Point Lenana at 16,355 ft) is physically
strenuous. From the top, begin the very long but utterly enthralling hike back
to the base of the mountain by traversing the Chogoria Route. You descend from
the peaks via the Lewis Glacier to Top Hut to connect to the Chogoria trail on
the Gorges Valley. Spend the night at Mintos Hut (4,300 m). |
 | Day 5:
After breakfast transfer back to Nairobi or continue on safari. |
