IST-C1: Turkana Truck via Sweetwaters, Samburu,
Marsabit, Chalbi Desert, Lake Baringo - 10 days
This rugged 1,800-km expedition in a purpose-built truck takes you up into
the heart of the Northern Frontier District via the Sweetwaters Private Game
Ranch and Samburu Game Reserve. You will traverse along some very poor roads but
this is compensated by the scenic route past lush agricultural zones, mountain
forest, the arid Liakipia Plains and attempt to cross the Chalbi Desert if dry
(during the rains it becomes a large shallow lake) before arriving at the Jade
Sea, Lake Turkana. You will experience a unique array of diverse cultures,
flora, fauna and wildlife.
 | Day 1: Mt. Kenya
Depart Nairobi in the morning for the Mt Kenya region. In
the afternoon, a game drive is scheduled at Sweetwaters to view wildlife
including chimpanzee; this private ranch is the only sanctuary for
rehabilitation in Kenya of these widely abused primates in a environment as
close to their natural habitat as possible. Overnight at Mountain Rock
Campsite. |
 | Day 2: Samburu
Depart in the morning for Samburu Game Reserve. Afternoon
game drive in the park. Dinner and overnight in a semi - permanent campsite
beautifully set under a canopy of trees on the edge of the Uaso Nyiro River. |
 | Day 3: Samburu
The day is spent game viewing in the park. Elephants abound
and you may see lion, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, grevy's zebra and oryx. |
 | Day 4: Marsabit
Head further north along the African highway to Marsabit,
an extinct volcano heavily forested on its upper slopes. After setting up
camp, we will visit a lodge inside the National Park situated on the edge of
a water-filled crater. It is not possible to do a game drive in this park as
thick forest hampers the progress of large vehicles and viewing is
difficult. Game to be seen may include elephant, buffalo and kudu. |
 | Day 5: Kalacha
Visit Marsabit town before heading into the desert and lava
flows. Camp at Kalacha, a small settlement on the edge of the Chalbi Desert. |
 | Day 6: Lake Turkana
An early crossing of the Chalbi Desert is planned. The
desert cannot be crossed if wet but there are alternative roads around the
North and South. Arrive at a semi - permanent beach campsite just outside
Loiyangalani soon after lunch and settle into 'traditional' Turkana Huts
with a cool breeze blowing from the lake-a perfect place to relax protected
from the scorching sun characteristic of the harsh climate of this remote
area. |
 | Day 7: Lake Turkana
Spend the day relaxing (and bathing in the crocodile
infested lake for those who may dare!) and a short boat excursion to visit
the surrounding areas is planned. It is possible, at an optional extra cost,
to visit Loiyangalani or one of the Turkana Manyattas for an experience of
traditional dances. |
